Christmas tree does 296 km/h while strapped to 596 kW Audi RS6 Avant

Image
As one would expect from famed American tuners Hennessey Performance, their version of Audi’s already wild RS6 Avant is ridiculous. 596 kW is certainly enough to catapult Ingolstadt’s finest wagon past the 300 km/h mark, however, ‘tis the season to be jolly, so why not see how fast the wild wagon can go with a Christmas tree on the roof… The seasonal speed record of 295 km/h breaks Hennessey’s previous best – 291 km/h achieved with a 745 kW Hennessey Jeep Trackhawk in 2019. A 596 kW tree with an Audi strapped to it… While conducting final high-speed testing of the Venom F5, focusing on tyres, braking and aerodynamics at speeds in excess of 400 km/h, the Christmas tree record was set with Mrs Hennesey’s personal Audi RS6 Avant. This comes ahead of Hennessey’s attempt to exceed 300 mph in early 2022 with the Venom F5. “We wanted to see what my wife’s Audi station wagon would run without the tree and we managed 205 mph. Then, the real holiday fun began when we mounted a real Chris...

Canepa sells 1979 Toyota FJ43 Land Cruiser restomod

Image
Anyone that is au fait with the classic car scene and the art of restoration and restomods will have most certainly heard of Bruce Canepa and the incredible operation that he has put together. From their rebuilds and upgrades of the inimitable Porsche 959 to the restoration of Deusenbergs, Canepa’s reputation most certainly precedes them and the same can be said for Canepa Inventory, specialising in investment grade collector car sales, and restoration. Canepa Inventory currently have 1979 Toyota FJ43 Land Cruiser “Reimagined” in stock, restored by The FJ Company. Of the Land Cruiser Reimagined, Car and Driver Magazine say “The FJ Company build quality, and details, are meticulously rendered and restored—such as the super-cool vintage Toyota badges that wrap around one of the rear corners—and its boxy, old-school charm is off the charts.” While it may look like a classic Land Cruiser, The FJ Company have incorporated and designed upgrades and tasteful modifications that stay true...

2022 speaks to a world of possibilities and exciting new cars. What we have today is no more exciting than a Hyundai Staria which is heading for South Africa next year. What’s exciting is this new product will play a major role in transporting families, friends and people. What it’ll also be pretty good at is acting as a tour bus. To give it a proper test, Ryan O’Connor has invited the Springbok Nude Girls to find out what they’ve been up to and what they think of the new South Korean van.   The post Watch: Ryan O’Connor & Springbok Nude Girls in the Hyundai Staria appeared first on CAR Magazine . WATCH: Toyota GR Yaris sends impatient Land Rover Discovery Sport flying

We know that certain Toyota products have the reputation of being tough but this one is a bit extreme. In today’s incident, we have the highly acclaimed Toyota GR Yaris at a traffic circle somewhere in the UK. This rally-inspired hot hatch is being followed by a rather impatient driver behind the wheel of a Lang Rover Discovery Sport. Shared on the r/idiotsincars subreddit, we can see right off the bat that the Discovery Sport is looking to get through the circle with haste but, almost as soon as the cars enter the circle, they are presented by a traffic jam. To circumvent this, the Land Rover gets the idea to switch lanes, only the drive completely loses all sense of spatial awareness and makes contact with the GR Yaris. The plastic bumper comically rebounds the impact from the Discovery Sport’s tyre and sends it rolling over on its roof. Motorists across the circle rush out of their cars to assist the driver. The GR Yaris looks to be unscathed but if you look closely, you can see...

BUYING USED: Compact sedans for under R180 000

Image
Sedans are less popular than hatchbacks but some need the added security and space of a boot. These are often more affordable than the more sought-after. Volkswagen Jetta 1,6   Space: 5 seats, 448/1 160L Safety: 6 airbags, ABS Cost of four tyres: R5 210 Road test: April 2014 (2,0 TDI) 0-100 km/h: 10,90 seconds Top speed: 164 km/h Power: 77 kW Torque: 153 N.m C02: 162 g/km Fuel consumption: 8,20 L/100 km If you are not too concerned about power or the ultimate in fuel economy, you have a good spread of options with this sedan. The safest bet will be a straightforward 1,6-litre, four-cylinder with 77 kW. Then there is a more modern engine in the shape of a 1,2-litre turbo. This will have slightly better fuel consumption if you drive carefully but does add a lot of complexity to the mechanicals. The same goes for the 1,4-litre turbo that raises the power to 92 kW and offers more torque at low revs. This may be the one to choose if you live at higher altitudes. If it’s ...

BIKE FEATURE: We visit exciting BMW Bike collection

Image
It is difficult to sum up the afternoon’s visit in three pages. From the moment Derick opened the door to his collection, the stories flowed; from one trip to the next, from one motorcycle to the other. His motorcycles are pristine and if they are not, some serious work is still to be done. Donovan Muller from Cytech Motorcycles is on hand for any type of restoration and servicing. Over the years, Donovan has done numerous restorations for Derick and the results are world class. The variety in this collection is partly the reason this is so impressive. However, these bikes are not parked in this facility to merely be exhibited. Each of them can be taken out and ridden hard at the drop of a penny. Derick’s sons and wife are part of this adventure and in any given year, it’s not uncommon for them to ride more than 60 000 km on a motorcycle. “It started with collecting the motorcycles from my father’s era. Next up, we collected BMWs from the ‘70s such as the R90/6 and R60/6. As we s...

STARTER CLASSIC: Daihatsu Charade Turbo (1983-’85)

Image
Founded in 1907 by Hatsudoki Seizo as an engine manufacturer, Daihatsu is Japan’s oldest motor company. Vehicle production began in 1960 in the Osaka region and the company specialised in diesel mini trucks before branching out to cars; the first, a 1,0-litre, four-cylinder sedan called the Compagno Berlina. Early Charades even competed in the Monte Carlo Rally and East African Safari in 1981 and 1982, respectively. In 1983, the Alfa Romeo factory in Brits took on a project that introduced the Daihatsu name to the South African passenger car market. PACKAGING Despite its diminutive frame, the Charade’s neat packaging gave it a spacious interior with seating for five adults. The boot accommodated 170 litres of packing space with folding rear seats freeing up 740 litres of utility space. Instrumentation is spartan; the Turbo substitutes a boost pressure gauge with a green light that merely tells you there is some boost occurring, which is wonderfully quaint. If it’s an old-school turb...
