ICYMI: the last week’s motoring news from around the world

ICYMI: It might be holiday season but that hasn’t stopped automotive news from rolling in; here are this past week’s interesting automotive happenings from around the globe…

ICYMI 51 X7BMW is facing a class-action lawsuit in the US due to the fact that the X7’s cupholders have the ability to set off the airbags. Should the cupholders get wet – very likely one would think – that liquid could run into the airbag control unit which, rather interestingly, sits beneath the cupholder in the centre console, oh dear… BMW have been denying the allegations, with each repair costing up to $2 000 (R31 000). No news yet from BMW South Africa on whether or not this effects local units.
ICYMI 51 Audi

Audi have opened what they call a Charging Hub in Germany and its both clever and practical. Six chargers are on offer outside the reservation-only luxurious facility, with snazzy vending machines available, a technician at hand and electric scooters that can be rented. Recycled battery packs from decommissioned development vehicles power the hub with capacity for up to 80 cars to be charged from the hub’s 2,45 MWh total capacity.

ICYMI 51 W12

Bentley has announced a farewell date for the technological marvel that is the W12 engine. Having been in use since 2001, the 12-cyclinder powerplant is to be retired in 2023 as Bentley looks toward an all-electric future. As a final farewell, we can expect a Mulliner special, likely a coupe version of the wonderful Bacalar.

ICYMI 51 Lotus

The final Exiges, Elises and Evoras rolled off the Lotus production line in Hethel this week after having assembled 51 738 cars in 26 years. While the Emira is on the way, it has been announced as the last lightweight, ICE Lotus. It would seem as though we now have a future of heavy electric sportscars to look forward too – hmmm. The final three vehicles will be put into Lotus’s heritage collection and will not be sold.

ICYMI 51 Yaris

An impatient man in a Discovery Sport caught the wrong end of a Toyota GR Yaris after clipping its right rear bumper at a roundabout. We’ve all seen how dangerous a rogue wheel on a highway can be if it, and it seems as though that’s just what happened here. The GR Yaris has such thin rear bumpers, its likely that the Disco’ Sport caught the bumper and hit the wheel behind it, resulting in an upside down Land Rover and our best performing story for the week.
