Toyota GR take victory at second WRC stage in snowy Sweden
The Yaris Rally 1 car took the runners up position in the Championship opening Rally Monte Carlo with Sébastien Ogier behind the wheel but Finns Kalle Rovanperä and Esapekka Lappi piloted their Toyota GR challengers to first and third respectively in Sweden.
The past weekend runnings in the snowy terrains of Sweden saw Toyota claim two podium spots after Finnish driver Kalle Rovanperä and co-driver Jonne Halttunen claimed the top spot with a total time of 2:10’44.900 throughout the rally.
Native experience driving on the white powder proved to be indispensable as fellow countrymen Esapekka Lappi and Janne Ferm claimed third in the sister Toyota GR Yaris. The Finns sandwiched Belgian duo Thierry Neuville and Martijn Wydaeghe in their Hyundai i20 N Rally1.
Kalle Rovanperä won 6 stages throughout the weekend and proved to be unstoppable in Sweden. This consistent performance with four bonus points scored enabled the Finn to take the overall lead in the championship with 46 points. Thierry Neuville chases with 32 points while Rally Monte Carlo protagonists Sébastien Loeb and countryman Sébastien Ogier opted not to participate in the white rally.
Welsh driver Elfyn Evans ended the 15th stage with some theatrics as he crashed his Toyota Yaris Rally1 rally car into a snowbank as he crossed the flying finish line of SS15 Umea.
The next scheduled event on the World Rally Championship calendar will bring the teams and drivers to the Mediterranean landscapes of Croatia between the 21st and 24th April of 2022. The event will be hosted in Zagreb County, Karlovac County, Krapina-Zagorje County, Primorje-Gorski Kotar County and Varaždin County. The ceremonial start, finish line and the service park will be located in the countries capital city of Zagreb.
