Alfa Romeo CEO confirms sports car for first half of 2023

There have been rumours emanating of a high performance model from the Italian stables but Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato has now officially confirmed the new project. To make the statement ambiguous, he further added that it will either be an EV or powered solely by an ICE.

This means that the project is still in its infancy since powertrain selection is core to the overall structure of the model and therefore made early on into its development Regardless, this is a positive affirmation for the historic automaker and their illustrious history with performance and motorsport.

In an interview with Autocar, Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato alluded to this project despite the automaker shelving the GTV and 8C projects in favour of volume based models like the Tonale.

He stated: “You will see something in that field in terms of sportiness in the first half of 2023. We use one word to define the brand and it’s ‘sportiness’.” Other than mentioning it will either be powered exclusively by a combustion motor or electricity, there are very few details of this “very exciting, very selective and very expensive” project.

This announcement comes in conjunction with the V6 powered Alfa Romeo Supercar that will hopefully also be previewed in the same year, with a retro influence of the T33 Stradale from the late 1960s – the fastest car in the world at the time. Enjoy this digital impression from Paul Breshke here

Once again, if the model confirmed by Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato is to employ combustion power, it will most likely house the superlative 2,9-litre Ferrari derived twin-turbocharged V6 which can put out as much as 397 kW and 600 N.m. Considering it will be a limited run production car, we can’t imagine it will signal the automakers first endeavour for a pure EV.

The preview of the sports car is expected by next year with a subsequent production version possible for 2024 or 2025.
