Ruf Bergmeister is topless speedster inspired by Porsche hillclimb cars

Debuting at The Quail motor show in California over the weekend, the Ruf Bergmeister ditches the windscreen and pays homage to bygone Porsche hillclimb cars of prominence.

While it may look vaguely similar to a standard Porsche 993 in certain regards, the Ruf Bergmeister has gone under the knife in quite a significant procedure. Carbon fibre, more power and modern design touches were on the agenda and the result is something that is far from ordinary – who needs a rear bumper afterall?

Keeping it at the rear, Ruf installed a dry sump, air-cooled 3,6-litre flat-six motor with a six-speed manual transmission accompanying it. This specific unit which has been designed and engineered by the tuning company puts out 336 kW and 559 N.m.

This is a substantial amount by today’s standards and we can only imagine it is further translated into impressive performance since the Ruf Bergmeister keeps its weight as low as possible compliments of a carbon body.

The man responsible for the form that the carbon fibre takes is Tony Hatter, the same designer behind the last air-cooled Porsche 911. Inspired by Porsche’s hillclimb cars of yesteryear, Hatter paid particular attention to the iconic Porsche 906, the 909 Bergspyder, and the 718 RS 60 Spyder.

Further details of the topless speedster include newly developed LED lights that can be retrofitted to all Porsche 993 models while the cabin is finished with black Alcantara galore, there is literally no other material used there.

Thus, one can surmise that the intentions of the Ruf Bergmeister are devoid of any frivolity and solely centred around pure driving enjoyment which is confirmed by Alois Ruf, owner of RUF Automobile GmbH after he stated: “When we began building our own automobiles in 1974 it was all for the thrill of the drive.” The Ruf Bergmeister is no different with Ruf further adding that: “We are honoured to be featured at The Quail and to celebrate the passion for driving with our friends. Bergmeister embodies the most elemental driving experience.”

For the time being, this debut is all we will get for the Ruf Bergmeister since the automaker didn’t mention any indicative pricing or how many models it plans on producing.
