ARCHIVE: Next Generation Ford Raptor with V6 power

Ford’s performance arm has recently lifted the wraps off the next generation of its terrain-taming Ford Raptor. A model that combines both a strong mechanical build and an intuitive technology kit, making it capable of taking on whatever off-road challenges that might appear.

Ford’s twin-turbo 3,0-litre EcoBoost V6 engine is the heart of the new Raptor. An absolute powerhouse that produces 211 kW and 491 N.m, paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission, power is distributed equally to all four wheels. Thanks to Ford’s performance, the engine delivers an immediate response to throttle input. In addition, there’s an anti-lag system that keeps the turbochargers spinning for up to three seconds after you take your foot off the padel. This allows for the quicker resumption of acceleration out of corners or through the gears when you accelerate again.

Off-road driving modes include:

  • Rock Crawl – Optimum traction for technical driving on loose surfaces.
  • Sand – Configures power delivery and transmission for smooth progress on sand and snow.
  • Mud/Ruts – Maximises off-the-line grip and stability for improved momentum.
  • Baja – All parameters in their most aggressive setting and also keeps the turbo spinning for up to three seconds to eliminate lag and hasten out-of-corner acceleration

With the significantly upgraded suspension that offers all-new aluminium upper and lower control arms, long‑travel front and rear suspension and a refined Watt’s linkage rear assembly which is specifically designed to enable maximum control across rough terrain at high speeds.

Like its predecessor, the new Ford Raptor’s design looks like it received a shot of automotive steroids, it’s bulkier, tougher, much more rugged and most importantly more powerful than its Ranger predecessors. Courtesy of its flared wheel arches and broad grille with F-O-R-D branded in bold and C-lamp headlight designs that make the bakkie seem even broader and more robust than it is. In addition to ample vent work and aero fittings, the Raptor plays host to more functional items such as aluminium side steps and the new signature box step in the cargo bay. Nestled in those sizable wheel arches are a choice of two 17-inch wheel designs one of which can be specified with bead lockers, wrapped in BF Goodrich K02 all-terrain rubber.

Inside the cabin, keeping the original theme of the Raptor, the design of this model’s heavily bolstered sports seats is inspired by the items normally occupied by pilots of the F-22 Raptor fighter jet. The Raptor’s Cabin ambience is lifted by the inclusion of matching ambient lighting. The Ford Raptor has a sporty steering wheel, wrapped in premium leather and includes thumb swells and magnesium paddle shifters. The digital instrument binnacle is supplemented with a 12,4-inch centre infotainment system, running Ford’s SYNC 4A infotainment software with Apple CarPlay and AndriodAuto wireless connectivity and a Bang and Olufsen audio system.

The Ford Raptor continues to show toughness and versatility, it is the ultimate performance derivative of the all-new Ford Ranger. With smarter technology controlling tougher, next-generation hardware, Ranger Raptor blends raw power with mechanical and technical precision to create the most advanced Ranger ever.
