2023 Cape Town E-Prix race results and recap

The 2023 Cape Town E-Prix has come and gone. With all that happened throughout the weekend, these were key moments for the local history-book-worthy event.

Key moments:

  • Porsche’s Antonio Felix Da Costa pulls two risky overtakes securing a winning spot for Tag Heuer in the drive of his life
  • Jaguar’s Sam Bird withdraws from the race after an accident during qualifying
  • Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein receives DNF after rear-ending Sebastien Buemi in Lap 1
  • Mahindra and ABT withdraw from the race following safety concerns
  • Jean-Eric Vergne sets the fastest race lap of 1:09:740 
  • Nissan’s Sacha Fenestraz secures Julius Baer Pole Position during qualifying and becomes the second-youngest pole sitter in Formula E history

Porsche secured pole position following a daring overtake by Antonio Felix Da Costa in lap 24 of the 30-lap race, which took place through the treacherous turns 7, 8 and 9. DS Penske’s Jean-Eric Vergne followed in second place with Envison Racing’s Nick Cassidy rounding off the podium in third. Following the results of the Cape Town leg of the Season 9 Formula E World Championship, Tag Heuer Porsche leads the teams standing with 126 points followed by Envision Racing with 84 points and in third, Avalanche Andretti with 80 points. 

Currently, Porsche’s second driver — Pascal Wehrlein — maintains his spot on top of the Drivers World Championship leaderboard with 80 points followed by Jake Dennis with 62 points and Jean-Eric Vergne in third with 50 points. Race winner, Antonio Da Costa is in fourth position with 46 points.

A harrowing race filled to the brim with adrenaline-fueled, battery-powered full-tilt driving on the scenic yet demanding Cape Town E-Prix circuit that left many drivers unable to finish the race. Unfortunately, Mahindra and ABT withdrew from the race following safety concerns. 

“Mahindra Racing have confirmed their withdrawal from the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship qualifying sessions and the Cape Town E-Prix Round 5 due to rear suspension safety concerns.” — statement from Mahindra

​​Cape Town proved that there’s an appetite for racing, judging by the crowds that attended, leaving a mark on the calendar for many repeat events to come. From the conversations had with drivers, crew and those in the crowd, the Cape Town Formula E E-Prix was well received, leaving lasting memories for many and at the top of that list is race winner Antonia Felix Da Costa.

The next round is scheduled for Sao Paulo on the 25th of March.
