The SAGMJ was founded by Robin Emslie, Barry Curtis and Kenneth Maxwell, a group of car enthusiasts who took the initiative and used the London-based Guild of Motoring Writers’ underlying principles to draft the requirements for developing a constitution for a South African Guild. The Guild represents the country’s top motoring content creators and photographers in the print, broadcast and social media industries. Its members include publishers, editors, journalists, photographers, vloggers, bloggers, influencers, and representatives from the automotive industry.

Since its inception in 1962, the SAGMJ has been at the forefront of promoting excellence in motoring journalism, offering its members a platform to hone their skills and showcase their expertise. The SAGMJ was founded by a group of passionate motoring journalists who recognized the need for an organization that would provide a platform for the exchange of ideas, knowledge-sharing, and professional development.

Over the years, the SAGMJ has grown in size and scope, and today, it boasts a membership of over 100 motoring journalists from across the country. One of the key objectives of the SAGMJ is to promote excellence in motoring journalism through various initiatives, such as the annual WesBank South African Car of the Year Awards. This event has become a highly anticipated highlight of the South African motoring calendar, with journalists and industry stakeholders eagerly awaiting the announcement of the winner each year.

In addition to the Car of the Year Awards, the Guild also hosts a range of other events and initiatives, such as training programs, media launches, and road safety campaigns. These initiatives are aimed at providing its members with opportunities to enhance their skills, build relationships with industry stakeholders, and contribute to the development of the motoring industry in South Africa. The SAGMJ has also played a significant role in shaping the South African automotive industry by providing a platform for industry stakeholders to engage with motoring journalists and the public. Through its various initiatives, the SAGMJ has helped to raise awareness of key issues affecting the industry, such as road safety, environmental sustainability, and technological advancements.

As the SAGMJ celebrates its 60th birthday, it is clear that the organization has made a significant impact on the South African motoring industry. Its commitment to promoting excellence in motoring journalism and contributing to the development of the industry has earned it the respect and admiration of its members and industry stakeholders alike.
