Introducing Ford’s new unibody bakkie; the Maverick Tremor

A few months ago, Ford announced the latest addition to their compact bakkie lineup with the 2023 Maverick Tremor Off-Road Package. This new model is designed for buyers who want to take their off-road adventures to the next level, while still enjoying a comfortable ride in the city. Would it have been a strong unibody contender in South Africa?

Equipped with the 2,0-litre EcoBoost engine that produces an impressive 186 kW of power and 375 N.m of torque, the Maverick Tremor is built for all types of terrain. The all-wheel-drive system is new to the Maverick lineup and includes a twin-clutch rear-drive unit with a differential lock feature that allows for greater off-road capability.

With five selectable drive modes, this compact bakkie can quickly and easily adapt to different driving conditions, whether on the road, in mud, sand, snow, or even for towing.

On the outside, the bakkie features a unique grille finish, blacked-out Ford logos, headlamps, taillamps and front tow hooks with signature Tremor Orange accents. For an even bolder look, customers can choose the available Tremor Appearance Package, which includes a Carbonized Gray-painted roof and mirror caps, as well as black side graphics on the bonnet and lower body.

The unique 17-inch aluminium wheels also feature a new Tremor Orange and dark grey anodized finish, while standard all-terrain tyres ensure improved traction on loose surfaces like sand and gravel. The new lower front fascia with a more aggressive approach angle and steel skid plates also enhances the vehicle’s off-road capabilities.

The bold design of the Maverick Tremor continues inside the cabin. The Black Onyx seats feature stitched Tremor logos and signature Tremor Orange accents, while the centre console, register vents, and door pulls are updated to include the new colour scheme as well.

Being on the market for several months now, it is clear that the Maverick lineup is not expected to ever be offered in South Africa but considering the popularity of the Ranger in the local market, a smaller unibody bakkie could perform well if logically priced within the Blue Oval hierarchy.
