Mazda South Africa confirmed that the CX-5 will be replaced by the CX-60. Like its predecessor, the CX-60 is a five-seater SUV available in two distinct configurations: the CX-60 2.5L Dynamic RWD and the CX-60 2.5L AWD. Both models are powered by Mazda’s Skyactive-G 2,5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, delivering a power output of 129 kW. The latest SUV from Mazda’s stable is positioned in the same market segment as the outgoing CX-5 and is equipped with a range of advanced technologies and driver assistance systems, placing it on par with other leading models in its class.

Mazda South Africa has expressed the possibility of adding a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) variant to its lineup. According to Mazda South Africa MD. Craig Roberts “That (a hybrid five-seater SUV offering in SA) would be the CX-60 and, at this stage, they are aiming to bring in CX-60 PHEV around Feb next year.”

Mazda Australia’s Marketing Director, Alastair Doak, has stated that a new CX-5 is on the way, however, no official release date has been announced yet. Speculations and claims suggest that the upcoming CX-5 model will be offered in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations, potentially powered by a four-cylinder engine. Moreover, there are speculations that Mazda might also include a hybrid powertrain option for the new CX-5, catering to the growing demand for efficient and eco-friendly vehicles.

Furthermore, there have been suggestions that the third-generation CX-5 could inherit a straight-six power plant, potentially incorporating hybrid technology. This could potentially involve the use of Mazda’s 3,3-litre inline-six diesel engine, as found in the CX-60 e PHEV.
