Toyota’s TRD Tacoma has shock-absorbing seats for off-road daredevils

Toyota’s all-new TRD Tacoma has left many South Africans hoping the next-generation Hilux shares some of its butch exterior styling but the interior is equally as much of a marvel. With inbuilt seat shock absorbers, this bakkie is built for some serious off-road fun!

Off-roading can be pretty tough, not only on the mechanical components of the vehicle beneath but on the driver and passengers too. Thrown from side to side over undulating terrain at a rate of knots and subject to inconceivably dangerous angles on sloping paths, bolsters and seat support can only provide so much assistance. Toyota believes they have a solution which they have installed on the all-new TRD Tacoma Pro.

In the first row of seats, all seems normal however open the rear doors and peer into the second row and an artistic display of mechanical components awaits. Dubbed IsoDynamic Sport Seats by boffs at Toyota, these front-row seats have the ability to dampen the rough terrain even further than the purpose-built suspension that connects the wheels to the chassis.

As demonstrated by the images, these seats employ inbuilt shocks, two air-over-oil shock absorbers per seat which mitigates lateral movement and dampens vertical undulations.

Over and above this, occupants of the front row of seats can manually adjust the dampers to their preference with the two knobs placed underneath pressure gauges in a carbon fibre housing. Unfortunately, those sitting in the back will not have the luxury of shock-absorbing seats on the TRD Tacoma, and considering the intricacies of the IsoDynamic Sport Seats encroach into the rear footwell, they will have limited space too but at least they get to marvel at the inner workings as they unfold in front of them.

With a new Toyota Hilux expected by late 2024 or early 2025, there is a hope that a highly strung model will be produced and brought into South Africa to take on the likes of Ford’s Ranger Raptor – time will tell.
