How does the US Tacoma fare against our local Toyota Hilux offering?

The grass is greener on the other side when it comes to cars and bakkies. Toyota US recently confirmed the MY23 Tacoma that looks brutal, but how does it stack up against our local Hilux offering?

The Tacoma range is characterised by two distinct powertrain configurations. Namely; the standard i-FORCE turbocharged 2,4-litre four-cylinder engine produces up to 207 kW and 429 N.m found in the lower half of the Tacoma range, and the i-FORCE MAX turbocharged 2,4-litre four-cylinder hybrid powertrain generating 243 kW and 630 N.m.

As for the Hilux, its range consists of a myriad of powertrain configurations, but the most high-strung powertrain is found in the range-topping Hilux GR-S 2,8GD-6 double cab, which is endowed with a power output of 165 kW and 550 N.m.

The Tacoma introduces the Trailhunter grade, which is a factory-developed overlanding rig equipped with integrated off-road equipment from ARB, Old Man Emu, and RIGID. It also features the Baja-inspired TRD Pro with the segment-first IsoDynamic Performance Seat, designed to enhance off-road driving control and comfort.

In terms of design and functionality, the Tacoma now offers an XtraCab long-bed configuration for improved interior functionality and cargo capacity. It also includes a 14-inch touchscreen display with the latest Toyota Audio Multimedia system, while the local GR-badged Hilux is offered with an 8-inch infotainment screen. As for safety, the Tacoma comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 on all models. 

The “truck” (SAID WITH SOUTHERN AMERICAN ACCENT) is designed, engineered, and assembled specifically for the North American market. It is built on the TNGA-F global truck platform and features a high-strength boxed, steel-ladder frame, whereas the Hilux is founded on the TNGA platform.

The new model incorporates a multi-link coil rear suspension to enhance ride and handling, and it has been engineered for improved off-road capability.

The towing capacity of the Tacoma is rated for 2 950 kg, while the Hilux GR-S is rated for 3 500 kg. Additionally, the Tacoma is equipped with a range of off-road features, including front stabilizer bar disconnect, multi-terrain select, crawl control, electronically activated locking rear differential and downhill assist control.

The most high-strung Tacoma model MSRP’s for around R550k, and the highest-strung Hilux offering, the 2,8GD-6 Double Cab 4X4 Legend RS, is accompanied by a price tag of R945k.
