Mitsubishi Creates Lowered Triton as Bold Accessorising Concept

After its international launch last week, several iterations of Mitsubishi’s double-cab body on frame bakkie began emerging. Now is the turn of the Lowered Triton; a demonstration of what the bakkie could be if its utilitarian function were to be negated.

Last week, Mitsubishi went beyond the simple unveiling of the new Triton. Alongside the standard production model and the rally bakkie, they presented a wide array of fully accessorized versions.

The boxy-shaped Triton we are now all familiar with was showcased in a special “Lifestyle Zone” featuring multiple flavours and different modifying opportunities for buyers with specific tastes and deep pockets. Watch the video of the “Lifestyle Zone” from the launch in the embedded video below. One variant that stood out was based on the club cab, boasting an aggressive body kit and a lowered sports suspension which completely negates its bakkie function, but shows how sporty and menacing the model could look.

While no details on the mechanical underworkings of the lowered Triton were divulged, we can see the aggressive body kit includes a completely redesigned front splitter that channels air upwards and into the wheel wells, which have been clad with far wider fender arches that conceal massive 5-spoke rims and aggressive Yokohama rubber. The side sills moving towards the rear continue the grey-coloured aesthetic of the front splitter and feed into the rear end which boasts a huge diffuser towards the ground while two spoilers exist on the roof and bakkie bin.

All of this does negate the purpose of the bakkie but Mitsubishi created this display to demonstrate exactly what their Triton could evolve into with the right vision. Among the showcased models was also a single cab customized for overland adventures, equipped with a snorkel, tent, bull bar, and extra lights. An off-road build based on the double cab configuration, featuring raised suspension and a slimmer front bumper to enhance the approach angle.

For modern nomads; a high-riding Triton double cab with a truck bed topper was seen hauling a small camper trailer, demonstrating the versatility of the sixth-generation model. Another highlight was the purpose-built rally car, prepared to participate in the Asia Cross Country Rally. This double cab had Ralliart branding, a six-speed manual gearbox, the Super Select 4WD-II system, and the 2,4-liter diesel engine generating 150 kW and 470 N.m.

The model has been confirmed for introduction in South Africa in Q2 of 2024 and will have its work cut out for it against the popular Hilux and conclusive Ranger range but maybe, by demonstrating what the Japanese bakkie could morph into, will the Triton earn popularity in the cutthroat segment.
