396 kW 6×6 Ford Ranger Looks Like Apocalyptic Ready Bakkie

Ford Global recently announced that they’d usher in a hybrid Ranger model in 2024, but it seems that the Ricardo company has beaten them to the punch with their 6X6 Ford Ranger HEX which combines V6 power with an electric motor.

Before we delve into the details of the six-wheeled Ranger, it’s important to understand who Ricardo is. Ricardo is UK-based firm comprising “a global team of consultants, environmental specialists, engineers and scientists” purposed to provide “innovative and cross-sector sustainable solutions”. The company has previously been involved in matters relating to air pollution, railway transport and even zero-emission RVs. Purpose-built and bespoke creations to cater to specific and niche needs, the 6×6 Ford Ranger is no different.

Being ecologically conscious is the cornerstone of the company’s work, and their converted Ranger continues this legacy. At the core of the 6X6 Ranger is a 3,0-litre diesel V6 producing 186 kW and is assisted by a electric Ford drive unit, which affords an extra 210 kW of power. When needed, the energy from the battery pack is used to deliver additional torque as a way of mitigating the loss of power experienced while carrying heavy loads. Regarding its load-carrying ability, the Ranger HEX is capable of a payload of up to 3 800 kg, which is more than 2 000 kg greater than the regular Ranger. Supporting the six-wheeler extended cab model is a De Dion rear suspension system.

No mention on battery size has been mentioned although this can be configured based on buyer preference.
