Mass Road Closures Following Torrential Downpour

Cape Town was battered by severe rain and wind over the long weekend. Across Cape Town were instances of flooding and dangerous weather conditions that resulted in several roads being closed and many areas reeling from the damages.

“Our dams are full, and the soil is already saturated after good rains this winter. Such heavy downpours in a short space of time can lead to flash floods, mudslides and general flooding of roads and residential areas. It is anticipated that the brunt of the storm will be experienced tonight, complicating potential rescue operations if needed.” – Anton Bredell, Western Cape Provincial Minister of Local Government.

Chapmans Peak, Franschhoek Pass, and ST Louries Pass were all closed off due to debris and damage in these areas. Many motorists were left stranded as their only way back to the innards of CT was through these areas. More notably, a section of the N2 Bridge, which spans across the Botrivier, has been swept away. On Sunday, the South African Weather Service issued a level nine weather alert and warned about the severity of the downpour especially in the Overberg and Cape Winelands. The Overberg area is still reeling from the damages sustained over the weekend, with areas such as Arniston and Struisbaai being cut off due to inaccessible roads.

“I again urge residents to exercise extreme caution as the disaster response now shifts to assessments of the extent of the damage and mop-up operations. This will take time and many affected areas will still not be accessible.” – Premier Alan Winde.
