In anticipation of the mid-cycle facelift for the GTI scheduled in 2024, Volkswagen is already plotting the introduction of an all-electric GTI set to debut in 2026. Andreas Mindt, the company’s design chief, shared a sketch on Instagram comparing the original Golf GTI with the recently unveiled ID. GTI concept.

With over 2,8 million units of the Grand Tourer Injection sold since the Mk1’s debut in 1975, this transition marks a significant shift toward electrification. The sketch hints at a potential production version of the ID. GTI, although the concept was based on the ID. 2all showcar, envisioned as the electric successor to the Polo supermini. Positioned on the MEB Entry platform, both concepts target affordability and spaciousness, with the upcoming SSP platform expected for the electric-only ninth-generation Golf in 2028. Whether the 2026 electric GTI will align with the Golf GTI or the ID.2 GTI remains uncertain, though indications point toward the latter, while VW has trademarked a new “GTI” logo featuring a lightning bolt in place of the “I.”

A recap on the concept model that debuted in September – the ID. GTI draws its inspiration from the earlier ID.2all concept and features a single electric motor powering the front wheels through a limited-slip differential, reminiscent of traditional ICE GTIs. While specific power figures haven’t been disclosed yet, it’s expected to offer over 170 kW of power, building on a promise of the ID.2all which is believed to go from 0-100 km/h in under 7 seconds, this ID. GTI could very well be faster.

Visually, the ID. GTI proudly displays GTI badges on various parts of the car, including the front, doors, skirts, wheels, and the rear. There are subtle design cues paying homage to classic GTI models, such as the black elements on the front bumper, side skirts, rear window surround, and lower rear bumper. These elements harken back to the black plastic bumpers and trim seen on early Golf GTIs. The red stripe on the grille and the 20-inch wheels are reminiscent of past Golf and Scirocco models. Additionally, the rear spoiler design takes inspiration from the current GTI Clubsport.
