“We are about to embark on an exciting journey that will expand our racing soul. With this new competitive challenge, motivated by our innovative capacity and commitment to sustainability, we will push beyond current boundaries. We are happy to be able to count on Giovanni, who is extraordinary in terms of experience, determination and team spirit.” – John Elkann, Chairman of Ferrari.

The project will be helmed by Team Principle and seasoned navigator, Giovanni Soldini. Ferrari claims that this new venture will allow the brand to improve its “technological know-how”, which is in line with its desire for continuous progress. The bespoke sea-faring project will rely on a host of advanced tech from its concept to the real-world example.

No information has been released yet that offers insight into what it might look like or any performance metrics. What we do know is that Ferrari believes that this project will inevitably result in innovations and solutions for sustainability that will ultimately stimulate the evolution of its sports cars.

“I am thrilled to start this new adventure with Ferrari. We are working on an important and cutting-edge project with an amazing technological potential that brings together different worlds and skills of the highest level. Working with an exceptional team in the research and development of innovative solutions that are respectful of our environment is a truly unique experience.” – Giovanni Soldini.

Sailing

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time the Prancing Horse has been involved in sailing. In 1951, Italian speedboat legend Achille Castoldi concluded his career with Alfa Romeo in search of an engine supplier to achieve the world speed record in the 800 kg speedboat class. Along with two close friends, Castoldi travelled to Maranello to order a Formula 1 V12 engine from Ferrari, which Enzo Ferrari surprisingly approved. The engine used was a Lampredi Tipo 375 V12 which was also used to power Ferrari’s Grand Prix cars for the 1951 and 1952 F1 seasons.

Initially producing around 287 kW, Ferrari switched to methanol as a fuel, which allowed for higher engine compressions. More notable power components were the twin superchargers and twin four-choke carburettors that allowed for a power output of roughly 440 kW. The V12-powered speedboat was called the Arno XI Hydroplane and, in 1953, managed to break the world speed record in the 800 k class. The beguiling speedboat achieved a two-way average speed of 241 km/h.

Sailing

Although straying from its typical land-based endeavours, Ferrari’s archetypical performance standards will likely be present in the aquatic offshoot.
