The European People’s Party is the largest political party in the European Parliament and has vowed to “revise” the ban on combustion engines that would take effect from 2035.

“We reject a ban policy – such as the ban on combustion engines – and will also revise it as soon as possible.”

The Euro 7 regulations have been a hot-button issue since the European Commission proposed more stringent air pollutant standards for combustion-engine vehicles in 2021. The fallout of these stricter standards has resulted in celebrated performance vehicles (among others) being discontinued or altered to adhere to stringent CO2 regulations. In December 2023, the EU Council amended the Euro 7 regulations, which retained the emission limits outlined by the Euro 6 regulations for light-duty vehicles.

“Our position is to continue the path of leading the mobility of the future and adopting realistic emissions levels for the vehicles of the next decade while helping our industry make the definitive leap towards clean cars in 2035.” – Héctor Gómez Hernández, acting minister for industry, trade and tourism.

The EPP has consistently opposed the proposed 2035 ICE ban. Jens Gieseke, a German lawmaker, represented the party during discussions regarding the increasingly stringent CO2 standards. Gieseke stated that the decision to pursue the ban would have a “Havana effect”, meaning that Europeans would need to rely on ageing ICE vehicles for decades, much like the people of Cuba.

This statement is significant because it comes from the European Parliament’s largest political party and seeks to alter what has already been signed off by the European Parliament and its member states.

Elections for a new European Parliament will take place in June.
