Expected to burst onto the scene in late Q1, GWM’s novel subsidiary in South Africa is ready to cater to lifestyle buyers with its first offering locally – the Tank 300. Three derivatives will be offered employing a choice of two powertrain options. Powered across the board with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol motor, the entry and middle-of-the-road offering deliver 167 kW and 387 N.m via an 8-speed automatic to all four corners. For extra outlay, buyers can opt for the Tank 300 HEV, which couples a hybrid system to the ICE and channels all 255 kW and 648 N.m to all corners via a 9-speed hydraulic automatic transmission. Between the two offerings, the former achieves a claimed 9.5 L/100 km on a combined cycle while the HEV manages a claimed 8.4 L/100 km.

Buyers can opt for a selection of 5 colours, namely White, Black, Mars Red, Orange and Grey and while the naming conventions of the colours lack excitement, a 224 mm ground clearance means the trail ahead doesn’t. The entire lineup is also rated at being capable of towing 2 500 kg (braked) while 17-inch rims come standard on the entry-level Super Luxury while the latter two are fitted with 18-inch alternatives. The mechanical workings also boast a slew of off-road features which further allude to the Tank 300’s intended prowess. All models are fitted with a rear axle differential lock while the HEV comes with an intelligent four-wheel drive TOD as standard. Depending on terrain, the driver can also select a driving mode which includes Standard, Economic, Sport, Snow, Mud, Sand, and 4L depending on the model.

Other handy features for trail driving include Crawl Control, which can be done in complete EV mode with the HEV and a Tank Turn – not to be confused with the silent axial spin all-wheel-drive EVs can demonstrate. Instead, this system brakes the inner rear wheel when executing a sharp turn on a loose surface. From the cabin, all of this is monitored through a chassis view (360 degree) camera system on the 12.3-inch multi-media display placed above the Mercedes-esque air vents. This system is capable of wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the entry-level derivative being the only version not to be fitted with a wireless charger.

Fitted with a plethora of active and passive safety features to fill several pages, the Tank 300 range comes standard with adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist and traffic sign recognition to name a few. For security, the lineup comes with keyless entry and keyless start-stop.
