Least Sold Bakkies of 2023

Bakkies are a significant segment within our local market, and although the segment leaders garner massive sales figures, the same can’t be said for all of the bakkie segments in 2023.

These are the three bakkie models that sold the least in 2023 for various reasons. 

Peugeot Landtrek: 343 units

Priced at R705 900, the Landtrek model is motivated by a 1.9-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder, affording the two-tonne double cab an output of 110 kW/ 350 N.m and the ability to two a braked load of up to 3 000 kg. Stellantis plans on establishing a facility locally which may reduce the price and increase appeal for the local market in the future.

Jeep Gladiator: 206 units

Only offered in Rubicon configuration, Jeep’s Gladiator model is the most expensive bakkie in the local lot (for now), yet its sales figures are leagues apart from cheaper names in the segment. As a reminder, the Gladiator costs R1.3 million, which is more than Ford’s Raptor, Toyota’s Hilux Legend RS and Isuzu’s Artic AT35. Jeep reported relatively decent sales figures for the first half of 2023 on the lifestyle bakkie but, after June, reported a noticeable decline in sales. The Gladiator can be summarised as a versatile double cab whose parts trick is its ability to be easily adjusted to go from a standard double cab to an off-roader lacking doors and a roof. At its core is the 209 kW/ 347 N.m Pentastar 3.6-litre V6 affixed to an eight-speed automatic transmission. 

Mazda BT-50: 69 units

Offered exclusively in double cab configuration, Mazda’s BT-50 had been refreshed closer to the tail-end of 2022 and in 2023 had garnered a muted response from local consumers. Throughout 2023, Mazda reported selling between 4 to 8 units each month. The BT-50 range begins with the 1.9TD Active model priced at R630 400 and is concluded by the 3.0TD 4×4 Individual model with a sticker price of R818 400. The range-topping model features a 3.0-litre turbo diesel inline four-cylinder and mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. the 140 kW/ 450 N.m engine’s efforts are fed to all four wheels. This allows the two-tonne double cab to lug a braked load of up to 3 500 kg. 

Interestingly, Isuzu reported that it sold three units of its KB model, two extended cabs and one double cab. The reason it isn’t grouped with the rest of the names in this list is because the KB is an outdated model, whereas the rest of the entrants are still in production.
