Mazda Introduces Sleek CX-70 Positioned as Smaller Sibling to CX-90
Mazda has just unveiled the 2025 CX-70, positioned as a two-row SUV beneath the CX-90. Buyers will have the option to opt for the e-SkyActiv G 3.3-litre inline 6 Turbo engine with M-Hybrid Boost or the e-SkyActiv G PHEV, marking Mazda’s latest entry into the people-mover category.

Sharing a platform with the larger CX-90, the CX-70 accommodates five seats and competes in the midsize SUV segment against rivals like the Volvo XC60. While additional black accents distinguish it from the CX-90, spotting differences might challenge the untrained eye. The CX-70 boasts a slightly different bumper and grille insert, along with available gloss black exterior trim.
Despite undisclosed dimensions, the CX-70 closely mirrors the CX-90, differing only by an inch due to its distinct bumper. Powertrain options include a 3.3-litre turbocharged inline-6 with 253 kW of power and a 48-volt hybrid system. Alternately, a 208 kW version or a plug-in hybrid producing 240 kW with a 2.5-litre engine are available. All three powertrains feature an eight-speed automatic transmission delivering power to all four wheels.

Inside, the CX-70 inherits the CX-90’s dashboard, featuring a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 10.3-inch infotainment screen. Notably, Mazda integrates Amazon Alexa for voice commands, a novel addition not present in the CX-90. Mazda introduces several new features with the CX-70, such as remote-folding rear seats. The cargo area sees a redesign, incorporating storage compartments beneath the floor and hooks for bags.
With no confirmation for local arrival, it is worth asking whether the mildly differentiated addition to Mazda’s SUV lineup is necessary. Should this two-row model make its way to Mzansi, particularly with the highly anticipated 6-cylinder powertrain?!
