Toyota’s Best Selling Models of 2023

Selling over half a million units across every single segment in the new car market for 2023, Toyota South Africa Motors managed to achieve its highest market share throughout its long and lucrative local history. Despite achieving a less-than-projected 2023 in terms of sales, it was smiles all around for Toyota South Africa Motors who managed to bag the title of market leader for the 44th consecutive year in Mzansi. The Japanese conglomerate of automotive brands contends each segment, spanning the A Segment to heavy trucks and sold a whopping 532 098 units in 2023. Local production at Prospection comprised 64% exports, which make their way to all corners of the globe while the remaining 36% have found their way onto South African roads. The half-million sales number however is 7% below original predictions due to market volatility and supply chain issues however Toyota still managed to achieve the highest market share in the history of TSAM with 26.8% of the overall market pie.

Outlined at the State of the Motor Industry event in Johannesburg, here are the volume segment leaders for Toyota throughout 2023 with the Hilux confidently leading the charge. The bakkie remains South Africa’s top-selling vehicle with 25% of the LCV market while the Hiace is the outright market leader with more than a 95% share. Toyota also reported the Land Cruiser achieved a 13% volume increase.

Confidently leading the medium to full-size SUV sales charts for Toyota was the Fortuner which dominates at a 51% market share, the updated Land Cruiser 300 managed to boast a 46% increase in volume from 2022 as did the Land Cruiser Prado.

All about Corolla! Shrudely bolstering the venerated moniker locally, Toyota has filled the C Segment with offshoots of the Corolla name, catering to hatchback buyers, sedan buyers and SUV buyers. Comfortably leading this part of Toyotoa’s sales charts is the Corolla Cross which managed a 39% share with continuous volume increases prevalent. The Corolla Quest volume grew by 24% from 2022.

Bearing fruit from the Suzuki Toyota partnership, the small car market yielded several winners for the vast and efficient Toyota dealer network in South Africa with the Starlet achieving 31% of the Sub B segment. The Urban Cruiser on the other hand, despite placing second on this list, suffered a volume decline which Toyota credits to ‘a category shift and supply constraints.’ The smallest offering in the lineup, the Vitz, managed to go from 11% to 15% of the A Segment in 2023.
