Both brands, operating under the Chery Group umbrella, have demonstrated impressive sales figures, marking a significant shift in the South African automotive landscape.

Jaecoo, an urban off-road SUV brand, made a sensational entry into the top 30 best-selling automotive brands in South Africa just weeks after launching its first model, the J7. Despite hitting the market on the 13th of April, the Chery subspecies secured the 28th spot out of 54 automotive brands by month-end. The J7’s rapid popularity, comprising 7.4% of Chery Group’s record monthly sales of 2 009 units, underscores the brand’s promising start.

Tony Liu, Executive Deputy General Manager of Chery/Omoda & Jaecoo South Africa, highlighted the excitement around the J7, noting its alignment with Jaecoo’s “From Classic, Beyond Classic” philosophy. The J7’s initial line-up, priced from R549 900, includes a range-topping Inferno derivative equipped with all-wheel drive and seven driving modes. Looking ahead, Jaecoo plans to introduce more models, including the J8 PHEV and the J6, enhancing its footprint in the new-energy vehicle market.

Sister brand Omoda also celebrated a triumphant first year in South Africa, outperforming several established Japanese and European brands. Reporting its sales figures to industry body Naamsa for the first time, Omoda achieved a 12.8% contribution to Chery Group’s record sales total. This performance placed Omoda 19th among the 54 automotive brands in South Africa, reflecting strong private-buyer sentiment as all sales were through the dealer channel rather than bulk fleet sales. Shannon Gahagan, National Brand and Marketing Manager for Omoda & Jaecoo, emphasized this as a testament to growing consumer confidence in the Omoda brand.

Currently, Omoda’s South African range includes the six-strong C5 line-up, featuring the limited-edition GT derivative. The brand’s distinct design immediately set it apart in a market saturated with generic crossover shapes. With plans to expand its range later in 2024, Omoda will introduce the luxury C9 flagship and the fully electric E5, with the C7 also slated for a future launch.

The combined success of Jaecoo and Omoda contributed to the Chery Group’s highest-ever monthly sales in South Africa, securing 6th place in overall manufacturer standings and 4th in the passenger-vehicle segment. Tony Liu expressed enthusiasm about these achievements, underscoring the brands’ strategic importance in Chery’s growth plans.

As Chinese brands continue to rise, their innovative approaches and appealing models are reshaping consumer preferences in South Africa. Jaecoo and Omoda’s performances signal a bright future for the Chery Group in the South African automotive market.
