Adding to its safety accolades like the Chinese C-NCAP assessment, the Tiggo 8 Pro Max on Friday, May 24, earned a coveted five-star rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP), the highest possible rating awarded by the safety authority. ANCAP star ratings assess the level of safety a vehicle provides for occupants and other road users during a crash. They also evaluate the vehicle’s ability to avoid or minimize the severity of crashes through advanced technology. Notably, ANCAP is among the first programs to mandate a comprehensive suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) for testing.

Introduced in South Africa in 2022 and updated in March 2024, the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max recently arrived in Australia and underwent the testing programme. The ANCAP rating for the model is based on destructive crash tests performed on the Tiggo 7 Pro, which shares the same T1X platform. ANCAP also considered additional technical data specific to the Tiggo 8 Pro Max. Comprehensive pedestrian safety tests were conducted on the SUV, solidifying the five-star rating for all Tiggo 8 variants available in South Africa.

The third-generation high-strength steel integrated body cage, developed through over 100 000 experiments, constitutes more than 60% of the vehicle’s body weight. The design also includes bamboo-inspired spacer panels to enhance structural integrity. In terms of active safety, the Tiggo 8 Pro Max is equipped with a comprehensive array of ADAS features associated with level two autonomous driving. These features include automatic emergency braking (AEB), adaptive cruise control (ACC), lane keeping assist (LKA), traffic jam assist (TJA), integrated cruise assist (ICA), and lane departure warning (LDW).

As a recap, the Tiggo 8 Pro Max is fitted with four pre-tensioned force-limiting seatbelts and ten airbags, including a driver knee airbag, second-row side airbags, and a unique airbag between the front passengers. These features make it one of the safest vehicles in its class. Other safety-enhancing features include a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) that constantly measures the temperature and pressure of each tyre, and cornering lights that improve night-time driving safety.
