In addition, the firms are also focusing on decarbonising internal combustion units by means of carbon-neutral fuel. The latter includes synthetic fuel (e-fuel), biofuels, and liquid hydrogen.

The companies have also stated that the more efficient and powerful engines will “revolutionise” vehicle packaging. In comparison with the automakers’ existing power plants, the new units will be more compact. According to the brands, this will allow for “improved” exterior designs and aerodynamics, which, as a result, will contribute to better fuel consumption.

“In order to provide our customers with diverse options to achieve carbon neutrality, it is necessary to take on the challenge of evolving engines that are in tune with the energy environment of the future. The three companies, which share the same aspirations, will refine engine technologies through friendly competition,” said Koji Sato, President, Member of the Board of Directors and CEO of Toyota.
