Hyundai Inster Unveiled as New City EV

Hyundai has whipped the wraps off the Inster, a sub-compact electric vehicle (EV) with which the South Korean carmaker aims to redefine its segment.

The Hyundai Inster measures 3 825 mm nose to tail, 1 610 mm in width, 1 575 mm in height, and 2 580 mm between the fore and aft axles. Hyundai claims the boxy crossover’s cabin offers 1 028 mm (987 mm when a sunroof is specified) of front and 982 mm of rear headroom, while the aft passenger compartment offers 885 mm of legroom. The Inster has a claimed luggage capacity of 280 to 351 litres (when sliding forward the rear pews).

As standard, the Inster’s 266 V electrical setup comprises a 71.1 kW electric motor, which is coupled with a 42 kWh battery pack. According to the automaker, when the latter is fully charged, the Inster has an electric range “exceeding” 300 km. This variant dispatches the 0-100 km/h sprint in a claimed 11.7 seconds, before topping out at 140 km/h.

However, customers also have the choice of a long-range derivative. This model sports 310 V electric architecture, an electric motor producing 84.5 kW and a 49 kWh battery pack. Thanks to the increased capacity of this model’s battery pack, it can travel 355 km on a single charge, Hyundai says. This variant’s 0-100 km/h sprint time and top speed come in at 10.6 seconds and 150 km/h.

“With [the] Inster, we’ve taken the small-SUV image to a bold new place for the global audience,” said Simon Loasby, Senior Vice President and Head of Hyundai Design Centre. “[The] Inster punches well above its weight, with distinctive design and an interior that maximises its potential in exciting, customer-centric ways. With [the] Inster, we’re redefining what it means to drive a sub-compact EV.”

It is uncertain whether Hyundai South Africa has intentions to bring the compact EV to the country following ts international unveiling.
