The gruelling 20-kilometre course with 156 turns that ascends over 1 438 meters to the summit of Pikes Peak proved no match for the Ioniq 5 N. Hyundai entered the competition with three vehicles: two Ioniq 5 N TA (Time Attack) Specs and one production Ioniq 5 N. The Ioniq 5 N TA Spec, driven by Hyundai World Rally driver Dani Sordo, triumphed in the exhibition class with a scorching time of 9:30.852. The second TA Spec, piloted by Randy Pobst, crossed the finish line at 9:55.551.

The Ioniq 5 N TA Spec boasts minimal modifications to showcase the prowess of the production model. It features minor software adjustments to boost the rear motor’s output by 27 kW, along with high-performance upgrades like new shock absorbers, motorsport-spec brakes, and sticky 18-inch Yokohama ADVAN A005 slick tyres. Ron Zaras, a Pikes Peak rookie and automotive media personality, got behind the wheel of the production IONIQ 5 N. Despite lacking modifications, Zaras put in a stellar performance, finishing the race in 10:49.267, highlighting the car’s impressive capabilities in its stock form.

Another significant chapter was written in 2012 when a Hyundai Genesis Coupe, driven by Rhys Millen, set a new course record of 9:46.164.

While Hyundai initially planned to compete with four vehicles (two Ioniq 5 N TA Specs and two Ioniq 5 N production models), Paul Dallenbach, who was slated to drive a production Ioniq 5 N, was unfortunately unable to participate due to injuries sustained during a practice run. In pre-race testing, Dallenbach had clocked a certified course time of 10:33:86.
