The road to 300 000 units wasn’t as straightforward as expected since it took 13 years for the first 200 000 T-Series bakkies to come to life. However, the recent surge in just two years to reach 300 000 highlights JAC Motors’ impressive growth spurt. This acceleration can be attributed to their expanding international presence and a corresponding rise in sales across global markets.

Feng Liangsen, a JAC Motors executive, emphasized the significance of this achievement. He spoke of the 300 000th T-Series as a symbol of the company’s commitment to independent operation, continuous improvement, and global expansion. He further highlighted the tireless efforts of the JAC Motors team, crediting them for this significant milestone in the globalization of Chinese-made pick-up trucks.

JAC Motors, established in 1964 as the Hefei Jianghuai Automobile Factory, has come a long way. Today, they’re a major exporter, shipping bakkies, passenger cars, and trucks to over 132 countries. South Africa is placed squarely in this globalisation strategy as a key right-hand-drive export market. In fact, South Africa received the honour of being the first to launch the new T9 right-hand-drive bakkie globally.

The current T-Series lineup boasts three double-cab options: T6, T8, and the range-topping T9. All three are available in both 4×2 and 4×4 configurations. But JAC Motors isn’t stopping there. They’re planning to expand the range by the end of 2024 with the introduction of single-cab T6 derivatives which will serve as workhorse alternatives in the brand.

Within China, JAC Motors holds the number two spot as bakkie producer and managed to sell 55 000 pick-up trucks last year, with a healthy 42 000 units exported internationally. Their international sales figures grew by a significant 9.9% year-on-year, while domestic sales experienced a healthy 16.3% increase. This translates to an overall sales increase of 11.3%. JAC Motors has a global reach, with exports spanning diverse markets across Latin America, the Gulf States, Central Asia, Europe, Africa, and Australia. In 2023, they achieved the top spot among Chinese pick-up brands in Mexico, Peru, and Kazakhstan.

At the recent Beijing Automotive Show, JAC Motors unveiled a battery-electric version of the T9, boasting an impressive 500 km range. The T9 EV packs a punch with an 88.02 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery. Power comes from two electric motors delivering 176 Nm and 342 N.m of torque, respectively. The outgoing T9 isn’t just about power, though. JAC Motors highlights its impressive load capacity. The double-cab can handle a payload of up to 1 000 kg and boasts a braked towing capacity that matches the local industry leader – the Toyota Hilux at 3 500kg. The load bed also comes with an anti-scratch and corrosion-resistant lining for added practicality.

Under the bonnet, the ICE-powered T9 hosts a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine churning out 125 kW and 410 N.m of torque. This engine is paired with a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission, delivering power to the rear wheels or all four wheels depending on the chosen derivative. The T-Series rides on an independent double-wishbone suspension system with coil springs, wrapped in two-tone 18-inch alloy wheels.

JAC Motors South Africa CEO, Göbel, positions the T9 as a disruptor in the local leisure double-cab market. He describes it as JAC Motors’ most advanced bakkie ever produced, packed with luxurious comfort features and cutting-edge safety technology. With a starting price of R549 900, Göbel believes the T9 offers extraordinary value.
