The box-fresh BMW M5 has officially been revealed, with the new iteration, most notably, employing a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The latter arrangement comprises the Bavarian brand’s familiar 4.4-litre, twin-turbocharged V8, which is coupled with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission, and an electric motor. Interestingly, the former produces 30 kW less (430 kW) than the previous generation. Torque has, however, remained the same at 750 N.m. The electric motor produces 145 kW and 280 N.m. However, a pre-gearing stage allows effective torque at the transmission input to be increased to 450 Nm.

In total, the plug-in hybrid configuration produces a whopping 535 kW and 1 000 N.m. The automaker claims the new M5, which tips the scales at 2 435 kg, completes the obligatory 0-100 km/h sprint in 3.5 seconds, which, compared to its forebear, is two-tenths of a second slower. The  0-200 km/h time comes in at a claimed 10.9 seconds. The top speed is electronically governed to 250 km/h. However, specifying the M Driver’s package lifts the latter to 305 km/h. According to BMW, the plug-in hybrid setup, when fully charged, sips 1.6 L/100 km. Up to 69 km of electric range is available.
