In 2023, we sampled the Suzuki on a drive in the Drakensberg. Indeed, although the Japanese automaker’s compact panel van seemed like an odd choice for such a trip, it provided several smiles on the journey. However, were you wanting to extend the drive to spots off the grid, you can, always, convert this small-size panel van into a compact camper van. That’s just what Suzuki SA did!

Indeed, in a bid to prove the value and versatility of the Eeco, Suzuki Auto South Africa recently embarked on a concept the firm bills #VanLife, a campaign with which the company challenged creative spirits and leisure-equipment designers to transform a standard Eeco to a camper van. The result? A Suzuki Eeco sporting additional pews; a “smart” bed that can convert to a single or three-quarter unit; oodles of storage space, including below-the-floor drawers; and a basin with washing facilities. In addition, the Eeco camper conversion features a veranda.

“As with many of our other vehicles, the proof of the pudding is in the eating thereof. We want entrepreneurs to drive the Eeco, see how much they can load and lock up in the loading bay and test for themselves how frugal the 1.2 litre four-cylinder petrol engine really is,” said Brendon Carpenter, Brand Marketing Manager of Suzuki SA.

As a reminder, the Eeco is powered by Suzuki’s K12N powertrain, a 1.2-litre, four-cylinder petrol unit producing 59 kW and 104 N.m of torque, exclusively sent to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox.

“For the #VanLife campaign, we were inspired by the social media trend where young and the young-at-heart were converting large panel vans into mobile homes,” said Carpenter. “Their novel use of space and unique ways of converting a stark panel van into a homely living space drove us to try the same, but with a panel van that is compact and affordable.” (As a reminder, the Eeco is priced at R212 900.
