Several years ago, the arrival of new Chinese models would be spread months apart but things in 2024 couldn’t be more different. New Chinese-made arrivals burst onto South African shores to great fanfare on a monthly basis and established brands in the Asian nation see the local market as a prospective foothold for the African continent. This means that the arrival or rebirth of several Chinese automakers has taken place over the past few months which includes the arrival of niche subsidiaries too.

The latest to emerge is GAC Motor, which now has two models on offer for prospective buyers. The future will likely see the arrival of other models from its comprehensive lineup, yet to be greenlit for the local market. At the moment, however, the Emzoom and Emkoo are on offer for prospective buyers, strategically catering to their respective SUV segments.

Local spokespeople haven’t made mention of any prospective monthly sales goals but the GAC Motor group has stated it is in the process of onboarding 20 dealerships by the close of 2024. Gauteng will host 4, while the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal are earmarked for 3. Mpumalanga and the Free State will receive 2 a piece while the remaining provinces are on track to receive 1 dealership.

By 2025 GAC Motor intends to increase this number to 30 and hopes to have another 10 on top of that number by the close of 2026. In addition, the majority of these dealerships are planned to be stand-alone as opposed to multi-franchise. Leslie Ramsoomar, Managing Director of Grupo Salvador Caetano and GAC Motor has further added that six months worth of service supplies and consumables have been ordered. Both models currently on offer further include a 5-year 150 000 km warranty and a 100 000 km service plan of the same period.
