However, this is not your run-of-the-mill Tank 500. Indeed, the Tank 500 you see here has been equipped with a raft of items to make it withstand rounds fired from small arms and improvised explosive devices. All of this while remaining seemingly indistinguishable from the standard vehicle.

The armouring package includes concealed “capsule-type” armouring for the interior, the roof and the floor, as well as under the bonnet. Bulletproof glass is also present, as is a “special” XGR system for the wheels. The latter allows you to continue driving even when tyre pressure has been lost.

The armoured Tank 500 is equipped with a 265 kW 3.0-litre, twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine, a unit not available on South African shores. As a reminder, locally, the Tank 500 is exclusively available with the Chinese automaker’s HEV powertrain, which is also employed by the top-tier Tank 500 and pinnacle P500 double cab, the latter of which we sampled on the local launch.

The hybrid configuration comprises a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbopetrol engine, producing 180 kW and 380 N.m, and a 78 kW/268 N.m electric motor. The total power and torque outputs are rated at 255 kW and 648 N.m, sent to all four corners via a nine-speed automatic transmission.
