This year, the Volkswagen Golf is marking a major milestone, with the Wolfsburg-based automaker’s best-selling car to date, with 37 million units sold, celebrating its 50th anniversary. Indeed, the car that replaced the original Beetle is half a century old. However, now, on its golden jubilee, the Golf has much more to celebrate — recently, it has been awarded as “Best Car of the Half Century” at the Best Cars of the Year — The New Car World Championships.

“Some manufacturers are barely able to keep their ‘most important’ models in production for five years. The fact that Volkswagen has been successfully building and selling petrol, diesel, pure-electric and hybrid versions of the Golf around the world for 50 years really does say it all,” said automotive journalist and founder of the awards Mike Rutherford.
“Since the very early 1980s, when I bought my first brand-new MkI version, I’ve purchased countless Golfs or run them as company cars. With some justification, it was often described as all the car you’ll ever need. And that’s as true today as it ever was.”

The judging panel for the awards comprised figureheads in the automotive industry; automotive consultants; media professionals, journalists and broadcasters; engineers; independent, world-renowned car designers; famous motorsport personalities; vehicle retailers; motor-club chiefs and motoring-event organisers, and even musician John Oates from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted American music duo Hall and Oates.
