Skoda Auto Volkswagen India (SAVWIPL) hosted a ‘Skill India’ initiative through its Student Car Project which sought to offer mechatronics students with the opportunity to show their talents. This year, the students have created the Pickup Truck by merging a Volkswagen Taigun SUV and Volkswagen Virtus sedan in a seemingly professional manner, albeit without much design direction and guidance. Despite this, the students developed the project from a collection of conceptual ideas, market analysis, research, development, procurement and final car testing spanning over a nine month period.

Piyush Arora, Managing Director and CEO of Skoda Auto Volkswagen India, said, “Our unique Student Car project, is a great platform that gives wings to the imagination of the students to share the future of mobility. We firmly believe that these initiatives of the Government will be fundamental for a ‘Viksit Bharat’.”
Most parts used were off of the shelf to keep production costs manageable but the students incorporated 3D printed components and other manufacturing techniques to successfully evolve the concept into reality. Over and above combining both models, the Pickup Truck also features additional accessories that lend it to off roading such as studded tyres, underbody protection and roof-mounted lights to name a few. Other obvious additions are a suspension lift and fender flares which give it a far more purposeful presence.

“The successful completion of Student Car Project 2.0 in India is a showcase of how young talent can learn to use cutting-edge technology, precision, and efficiency to create industry-leading vehicles. By bringing global manufacturing practices to India, our goal is to create environments where young innovators can grow into the changemakers of tomorrow, strengthening India’s role as a global manufacturing hub.” said Andreas Dick, Member of the Board of Management for Production and Logistics, Skoda Auto a.s.
Since this is simply a student project, there is no certainty that Volkswagen will choose to pursue this bakkie, it already has the Amarok available locally, as well as the unibody Saveiro which seems to be where this Pickup Truck would find itself in the market.
