The Ford Mustang Dark Horse has officially launched in South Africa, with the first 50 units already allocated to customers. However, there is good news — as the pinnacle Mustang in the Blue Oval brand’s local portfolio is not a limited-run model, more units are, indeed, penned in to be unleashed on South African shores in 2025, with Ford South Africa saying they will manage the ongoing demand for this variant.
“As the halo model in the Mustang line-up, the Dark Horse will be a more exclusive offering for our enthusiast customers in South Africa, but it forms part of our normal Mustang line-up and is not a limited-run or special-edition version,” said Sunil Sewmohan, Executive Director of Product Marketing at Ford South Africa.

As a reminder, the Mustang Dark Horse is priced from R1.5 million, making it R200 000 more expensive than the Mustang GT. However, the Dark Horse derivative features, in addition to an array of model-specific exterior and interior design items, a raft of upgrades over its GT sibling.
“The Mustang Dark Horse elevates the performance and driving experience [of the seventh-generation GT] to even greater heights,” said Sewmohan. “We’ve taken the new Mustang, the best of our new 5.0-litre V8 performance, and added power, improved the aerodynamics, tyres and steering.”
For the Dark Horse, the Coyote engine has been uprated to produce 334 kW (6 kW more than the GT). The torque output has remained untouched, and matches the 540 N.m of the GT. Power is exclusively sent to the rear axle via a 10-speed automatic transmission.

In addition, the Dark Horse gains brake-cooling NACA ducts; an auxiliary engine-oil cooler; a rear-axle cooler; and a “unique” radiator, which is lighter than the GT’s and provides improved cooling capability by way of more powerful cooling fans. The chassis has also been tailored to meet the Dark Horse’s performance provisos.
The Dark Horse further features a lightweight, Ford Performance-designed strut tower brace and K-brace for improved handling and steering feedback, and a Brembo braking system. The latter setup comprises 390 mm front and 355 mm rear ventilated discs, and six-piston fore and four-piston aft callipers, housed behind 19-inch alloys that are wrapped in mixed-size (255/40 front and 275/40 rear) Pirelli P Zero rubber.
