Aimed at tackling extreme terrains and carry heavy loads, all while offering “relative” luxury and comfort for its occupants, SVI Engineering’s newly launches sister company Ulterio Motiv has whipped the wraps off its latest project — a six-wheeler Ford Ranger.

Available with the single-cab, SuperCab and double-cab 4×4 models, for the six-wheeler conversion, the Ranger’s standard ladder-frame chassis is extended to cater for the third axle. The latter, load-carrying axle, the firm says, does not impact the car’s four-wheel-drive arrangement.

The rear suspension configuration works on the principle of a “bogie” system, which results in the additional axle carrying “around” 40% of the rear mass, while the driven axle sited in the middle carries “around” 60% of the mass. In addition, the the braking setup has been upgraded, with the rearmost wheels housing disc units.

According to the company, thanks to the addition of a third axle, the 6×4 Ranger, depending on the body style, boasts a total payload of “more than” 2 000 kg.

So, how much can you expect to pay to convert your Ranger into a 6×4 six-wheeler? Well, in short, R265 000, which excludes VAT and the price of the donor vehicle. According to the firm, the conversion takes six weeks.

As a reminder, the least expensive (single-turbocharged) 4×4 variants, which are equipped with the Blue Oval brand’s familiar 10-speed automatic transmission, in Ford South Africa’s Ranger single-cab, SuperCab, and double-cab model ranges are priced from R608 100, R593 300, and R688 800, respectively. The twin-turbocharged SuperCab and double-cab derivatives sporting the same drivetrain and cog swapper are priced from R741 300 and R854 500, respectively.
