Rolls-Royce 103EX Vision Next 100 Concept

When it was unveiled in 2016, Rolls-Royce’s 103EX concept not only celebrated the British luxury carmaker’s centenary, but it also offered a forward-thinking glimpse into the marque’s take on the direction future mobility would take.

Under the guidance of the Design Director Giles Taylor, the 103EX embodied Rolls-Royce’s ambition to combine luxury, sustainability, and cutting-edge technology. The vehicle was intended to push boundaries, blending traditional the graceful styling of the firm’s traditional wares with futuristic innovations.

One of its most revolutionary features was the implementation of an expanded autonomous driving system. Dubbed ‘Voice of Eleanor’ (referencing the name given to the Spirit of Ecstasy sculpture adorning the bonnet of every Rolls Royce) the module was rooted in the notion of the chauffeur-driven experience for which many marque’s models are famed, but redefined this dynamic by showcasing how such technology could transform a cosseting journey into an even more immersive experience. For instance; in addition to bringing the car around when ‘her’ passengers are ready, and then safely transporting them to their destination while freeing her from the task of driving, Eleanor also uses artificial intelligence to serve as a personal assistant to organise the occupants’ itineraries and make suggestions to streamline their journey and associated tasks.

The 103EX’s electric powertrain and aerodynamic bodywork also pointed to Roll Royce’s aim to marry traditional elements such as a reimagined take on the signature Pantheon grille and a long, flowing silhouette with innovative and environmentally responsible powertrain technology.

Inside, the 103EX continued to push boundaries. Being a fully autonomous vehicle, concessions to driver-accommodating packaging went out of the window and the cabin became a minimalist lounge with a grand sofa situated in front of an OLED screen.

The concept embarked on a four-year global tour, concluding the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed. While autonomy’s future remains uncertain, Rolls-Royce’s bold vision suggests they’ll be ready when, or if, the time comes to retire the chauffeur. Although purely a concept showcase, the 103EX’s influence is evident in the design of Rolls-Royce’s first production-series electric car: the Spectre. Many of this model’s key features, from its aerodynamic shape to its luxurious interior and focus on sustainability, can trace their origins back to this remarkable design study.
