The W1 Continues McLaren’s Lineage of Hypercar

Signifying a new chapter in McLaren’s venerable ‘1’ car lineage, W1 is the “ground-breaking” successor to the legendary F1 and P1.W1

Billed as the ultimate expression of a real supercar, the W1 “elevates” the Woking-based automaker’s ‘1’ car lineage to new heights, McLaren says. According to Michael Leiters, Chief Executive Officer of McLaren Automotive, “The McLaren W1 is a celebration of both the excellence of the iconic McLaren F1 and McLaren P1.”

The mid-mounted MHP-8 powerplant comprises a (683 kW/900 N.m) 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged V8, with a flat-plane crankshaft, and an electric drive module that produces 255 kW and 440 N.m of torque. Coupled with a 1.384 kWh battery pack, the hybrid powertrain develops a combined 938 kW and 1 340 N.m, exclusively sent to the rear axle via an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox – good for a top speed of 350 km/h.

Stopping power is provided by McLaren’s ‘Carbon Ceramic Racing+’ (MCCR+) braking setup, which comprises fore and aft 390 mm brake discs, and six- and four-piston front and rear forged monobloc callipers. McLaren claims the MCCR+ system brings the W1 to a halt from 200 km/h over 100 metres, and from 100 km/h to a standstill in 29 metres. In terms of acceleration, the W1 is capable of dispatching the obligatory 100 km/h sprint from a standstill in 2.7 seconds, continuing to 200 km/h in a total of 5.8 seconds and reaching 300 km/h from stationery in only 12.7 seconds…
