GAC Motor South Africa has announced a significant price reduction for its Emzoom and Emkoo models, citing a favourable foreign exchange rate amidst reinforcing its commitment to the South African market. Here’s how much the models will now cost.

The move comes as good news for potential customers in the highly competitive SUV segment but could raise concerns for those who recently purchased these vehicles at previous retail prices. According to Leslie Ramsoomar, Managing Director of GAC Motor South Africa, the decision reflects the company’s commitment to its customers and the local market. “We believe in the power of transparency and commitment to both our customers and investors,” he said. “This price drop for the Emzoom and Emkoo is a testament to our belief that consumers deserve to benefit directly from favourable forex movements. This is a win for everyone — from our valued customers to our partners, who will see the fruits of our strategic investments in the market.”

  • Emzoom Comfort – R419 900 (from R469 900)
  • Emzoom Executive – R439 900 (from R499 900)
  • Emzoom R-Style – R489 900 (from R549 900)
  • Emkoo Executive – R519 900 (from R599 900)
  • Emkoo Executive Plus – R559 900 (from R659 900)

The price reduction is part of a larger strategic initiative to expand the brand’s footprint in South Africa. GAC Motor plans to increase its dealer and service network to 40 locations and introduce new models in 2025, demonstrating its long-term commitment to the region.

However, this news may be difficult for customers who purchased GAC models earlier in 2024 after the Chinese automaker made its debut in Mzansi. In response to potential concerns, GAC Motor South Africa has encouraged affected buyers to reach out directly through its website or contact numbers. The company has pledged to address these issues fairly, though specific details about potential remedies have not been disclosed.

The price cut underlines the dynamic nature of the automotive industry, where fluctuations in forex and global manufacturing costs can have a significant impact on local markets. While the reduction is expected to attract new customers, it also highlights the challenges of maintaining customer satisfaction during such transitions.

Over the past several months, there have been an influx of Chinese automakers entering the local market, all with the expectation to gain as much market share as possible. At the launch of the Emkoo, digital editor Alex Shahini added that the competent product was priced just out of reach for a prospective buyer in the market, considering GAC Motor still has an unproven track record. These price adjustments benefit the South African consumer, who are now spoiled for choice, with value for money offerings from the Far East.
