Earlier this week in Johannesburg, the Isuzu team hosted members of the media for a recap of 2024 and a glimpse into their future plans. Nothing on the LCV and passenger vehicle front was too out of the ordinary from what we already know was revealed but Isuzu CEO and President of naamsa Billy Tom divulged that the automaker’s global aspirations were to endeavour into the BEV segment in multiple global markets. No specific details on the models were given during the presentation but both light commercial vehicles and small trucks that employ fully electric powertrains are being readied for countries like Norway, the UK, Thailand and closer to home; Australia.

While nothing is on the map yet for the local market, Tom insinuated that we should be familiar with the Australian market since many products in the Isuzu portfolio are shared between both countries. What we do know is coming to South Africa in 2024 is an RS spec mu-X that adds a bit of sporty character to the Fortuner rivalling SUV. Our previous speculation remains unconfirmed with timely updates to the D-Max X-Rider.

What Isuzu did launch were two special edition trucks which celebrate 60 years of the Japanese automaker’s trucking legacy. The models receiving this special treatment are the SBR 500 and JCR 800. The SBR 500, originally launched in the 1970s, played a vital role across industries such as logistics, construction, and agriculture says Isuzu. The revamped Special Edition maintains its versatility, now offering an 8 999 kg gross vehicle mass (GVM), ensuring exemption from the 80 km/h speed limit, allowing for speeds up to 100 km/h where permitted. The JCR 800, a staple of South Africa’s economic expansion in the 1980s, was a trusted medium-duty truck widely used in logistics, construction, and agriculture. With a 15 000 kg GVM and a strong reputation for durability, the reintroduced version continues its legacy of efficiency and adaptability, featuring larger tyres for improved clearance and fuel-efficient operations.
