This move signals Audi’s commitment to expanding its PHEV lineup, as CEO Gernot Döllner states, “As part of our model initiative, we are significantly expanding our range of plug-in hybrids in 2025.”
The new A5 Avant and Saloon e-hybrid quattro models combine the trusted 2.0 TFSI petrol engine with an electric motor, delivering a combined 220 kW. A key advancement is the new 25.9 kWh battery, a 45% increase in capacity over previous models, enabling significantly extended electric-only driving. Technical Development board member, Geoffrey Bouquot, highlights this, saying, “The increased electric range of our new plug-in hybrids enables our customers to cover the majority of their daily journeys using only electric power.”

Charging times have also been slashed, with an 11 kW AC charging capability reducing a full charge to a mere 2.5 hours. Performance figures are respectable, with 0-100 km/h achieved in 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h. Notably, Audi has focused on enhancing regenerative braking, allowing drivers to adjust recuperation levels via steering wheel paddles, mimicking the experience of its full-electric models.

Audi adds that the hybrid management system is designed for optimal efficiency, offering “EV” and “hybrid” driving modes. A new digital slider allows drivers to precisely control the battery’s state of charge, ensuring electric power is available when needed, such as for urban driving. The electric motor, integrated into the seven-speed S tronic transmission, delivers 105 kW and 450 N.m of torque, contributing to a smooth and responsive driving experience.
Audi has taken a cell-to-pack approach with the battery, directly integrating cells into the housing for increased energy density and reduced space requirements. This, combined with improved cell chemistry, allows for higher electrical output even at low charge levels. Standard equipment is generous, including three-zone climate control, auxiliary air conditioning, and 18-inch wheels. Retaining the hallmarks of its moniker, Audi adds that practicability is still at the fore with the Avant offering up to 1 306 litres of cargo space and the Saloon 1 175 litres with the rear seats folded. Towing capacity is also impressive at 1 900 kg for braked trailers.

With its enhanced electric range, faster charging, and intelligent hybrid management, the new Audi A5 e-hybrid aims to provide a compelling blend of performance and efficiency, catering to the growing demand for flexible and eco-conscious driving solutions.
