BYD Plots Global Domination with New Mega Factories and Ambitious Export Output

Elon Musk may have shrugged the thought of BYD off a few years ago, but the Chinese automaker may have the last laugh with extreme expansion projects currently underway which will possibly see global exports double to 800 000 units.

In 2024, Tesla produced 1 774 442 EVs while BYD managed 1 777 965 units in the same period. This now makes the Chinese automaker the world’s leading electric vehicle manufacturer but BYD is accelerating its global expansion with major investments in production facilities and an ambitious goal of doubling its overseas sales next year. At the heart of this expansion is a colossal new factory in China which is complemented by a strategic move with production in India and a concerted push to dominate international markets.

In Zhengzhou, Henan province, BYD is constructing a manufacturing complex of unprecedented scale. Spanning approximately 130 square km, this enormous facility is designed to produce over a million vehicles annually. For context, the Sandton business hub is about 144 square km! BYD currently employs 60 000 workers at the site, with plans to recruit an additional 20 000 in the coming months. This expansion is not only focused on ramping up production but sources also state this the facility will serve to enhance research and development to keep BYD at the cutting edge of EV technology.

Can you imagine a factory larger than San Francisco? It’s happening in China with BYD’s Zhengzhou branch which will be 10 times larger than Tesla’s Gigafactory in Nevada.

BYD is also coincidentally increasing its global footprint with an agreement to produce in India. This strategic decision should pay dividends since India’s burgeoning population is one of the world’s fastest-growing EV markets. The company has proposed setting up a factory near Hyderabad, Telangana which would become its first manufacturing presence in the country. State officials have already identified three potential locations for the plant, and BYD representatives are currently evaluating them. Once operational, BYD intend for the facility to  produce up to 600 000 electric vehicles annually.

With plans to double its exports to 800 000 units in 2025, the company has been gaining traction in markets such as Europe, Latin America, and Southeast Asia, where demand for affordable, high-tech electric vehicles is surging. To avoid potential tariffs and trade restrictions, BYD is also considering local assembly options in key regions, allowing it to maintain competitive pricing while benefiting from its established supply chain in China. But where does the South African market find itself in all of this strategically planned domination? Since its arrival in mid-2023, BYD has failed to resonate with local buyers with its majority electrified fleet but it continues to broaden its product lineup with the latest arrival being its Shark bakkie.

Considering the planned global domination, it is worth marvelling at the fact that the Chinese automaker has only been producing vehicles for just over 20 years. Impressive.
