SA Armoured Vehicle Specialist Introduces New Entry-Level Solution
Pretoria-based SVI Engineering has developed an innovative new armoured vehicle solution aimed at keeping loved-ones safe in a hijacking event.

An unfortunate blight on the South African landscape remains the number of armed hijacking attempts that plague its citizens. While SVI specialises in both complete armouring solutions (up to B4 and B6-level conversations) and ground-up armoured vehicle creations, the brand recently turned its attention to a more attainable, less intrusive package.
Under the catchphrase, “when smash and grab is not enough”, the new SVI Lite solution offers customers the opportunity to armour only the doors and side windows of vehicles, including the best-selling Toyota Corolla Cross.
Adding 15 kilograms of mass per door, SVI Lite consists of Kevlar panels placed within the door panel, with lightweight armoured glass able to prevent a 9 mm bullet shell from passing through. Statistically, a 9 mm is used in most hijacking events.
Unlike many other armour-plating solutions, SVI Lite still allows the vehicle’s electrically operated windows to function normally. This is a practical consideration for everyday use, including handling parking tickets and access control.
While a full B6 or B4 upgrade to an existing vehicle can take up to 8 weeks, SVI Lite can be installed within 14 days.
“We compare this solution to wearing an armoured vest,” says SVI CEO Jaco de Kock. “In the same way a vest is designed to protect a person’s vital organs, our SVI Lite solution affords the driver of the vehicle time to make a decision that could save the lives of loved ones.”

Initially available on the Corolla Cross and Ford Ranger, SVI’s plans include expanding this solution other popular products like the Toyota Hilux and Fortuner, and the Ranger’s Everest SUV sibling. The company is also in talks to allow this solution to be added to a new vehicle ordered from the showroom floor.

With SVI’s existing QVM status with Ford, installations on the Ranger and Everest won’t affect manufacturer warranties.
