Winner: Porsche 911 Carrera

Our annual Performance Issue featured several cars that were faster, louder or more head-turning than the white 992.2-generation Porsche 911 Carrera tested in this edition. Yet, true to form, it was the relatively unassuming Stuttgart creation that most experienced testers would spend their own money on. The “back-to-basics” entry-level 911 forgoes the hybrid powertrain technology featured in the Carrera GTS and does without the wings and aero garb featured on halo models like the GT3 and forthcoming 992.2 Turbo, yet still managed a 3.7-second 0-100 km/h acceleration run on our test strip. This isn’t the first time a 911 has won this category and, based on the small yet significant improvements Porsche unlocks with each new generation of this iconic sportscar, it won’t be the last time.

First runner-up: Ford Mustang

Its value proposition aside, we love the modern Ford Mustang because it does exactly what it says on the tin: it entertains. Even the so-called entry-level GT derivative makes the right noises, turns heads and delivers a brilliant sense of occasion.

Second runner-up: Aston Martin Vantage

We knew the new Vantage would turn heads and make lovely noises, what we weren’t expecting was just how rowdy, characterful and, indeed, playful Aston Martin has made its new entry-level proposition.
