An agreement that, in the long run, will grant Suzuki access to Toyota’s hybrid and BEV technology, in the meantime, Toyota has enjoyed significant local sales success with its portfolio of rebranded Suzuki products. These include the Baleno-inspired Starlet Hatch, the Fronx-derived Starlet Cross and the Grand Vitara-based Urban Cruiser. The Toyota Vitz is also a repackaged Suzuki Celerio.

Including drawing attention to the respective attributes of each donor vehicle, while it’s fair to suggest that by default, this agreement has also benefited Suzuki’s local sales, products like the Swift and Jimny have, to date, been viewed as “off limits” to Toyota’s product planners. This line in the sand will now be crossed as Toyota has confirmed it will introduce a new entry-level member of its vaunted Land Cruiser family, using the venerable Suzuki Jimny as a donor vehicle. The as-yet-unnamed Jimny-based product will join the recently updated 79, the Prado, and the flagship 300 in Toyota’s modern Cruiser portfolio.

A vehicle with an enviable off-roading pedigree to match that of the Land Cruiser badge, the fourth-generation Suzuki Jimny was introduced in 2018, with a first-ever four-door model joining the fray in 2023. As a reminder, together with a full bouquet of off-road driving modes, the modern Jimny is powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a manual or automatic transmission.

Of significance in terms of the ability of the Jimny to transform into a so-called entry-level Land Cruiser package is the availability of several aftermarket accessories and off-road upgrades already available for the Suzuki.

The newest member of the Toyota Land Cruiser family is expected to be available in time to attend Suzuki’s 2025 Jimny Gathering. It remains to be seen how welcome it will be, though…
