Updated Lexus RX Breaks Cover

Lexus has unveiled the revised RZ electric SUV in Brussels, showcasing a raft of changes designed to elevate the driving experience and address key customer concerns. The RZ has undergone a comprehensive overhaul, focusing on four key areas: driving pleasure, range, performance and design. The most intriguing development is the introduction of the “Interactive Manual Drive” system on the RZ 550e F Sport. This electronic system allows drivers to control power output using paddle shifters, mimicking the feel of a manual gearbox. Lexus claims it provides “real-time feedback through the throttle, and sounds and visuals that create a closer connection between man and machine”. With a virtual eight-speed setup and simulated engine sounds, this feature aims to inject a dose of driver engagement into the electric crossover/SUV segment.

Beyond the manual mode, the RZ’s electric powertrain has received substantial upgrades. A new eAxle with improved motor output and inverter efficiency, coupled with a larger, 77.0 kWh lithium-ion battery, promises a significant boost in range. Lexus is targeting a potential increase of up to 100 km, depending on the model and final homologation. Charging times should also be reduced, thanks to a new 22 kW AC onboard charger and a battery pre-conditioning system.

Performance figures have also seen a bump. The RZ range now offers three power options: 165 kW in the RZ 350e, 280 kW in the RZ 500e and a potent 300 kW in the RZ 550e F Sport. The all-wheel-drive RZ models also benefit from an increased towing capacity of up to 1 500 kg.

Lexus has also refined the RZ’s driving dynamics with the introduction of a steer-by-wire system. This technology, making its Lexus debut, aims to provide a more intuitive and comfortable driving experience, particularly on winding roads. The system dynamically adjusts the steering ratio based on vehicle speed to provide improved manoeuvrability at low speeds and stability at high speeds.

To further enhance the driving experience, Lexus has made adjustments to the DIRECT4 all-wheel-drive system and the Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management. Structural rigidity has also been increased, and the suspension has been retuned to improve dynamic performance, stability and ride comfort.

Inside, Lexus has focused on creating a more luxurious and refined cabin. New interior design elements include laser-processed graphics on Ultrasuede door panels and a multi-colour ambient lighting system with a dynamic shadow effect.

The RZ 550e F Sport features sportier exterior styling with aerodynamic enhancements, 20-inch aero-design wheels and an exclusive Neutrino Grey exterior colour. The interior boasts a Black x Dark Grey colour scheme with blue stitched accents, F Sport seats, and an aluminium pedal set.
