Barn Find BMW 325iS Pops up For Sale

There are few cars that need an introduction in South Africa and one of those is the revered BMW 325iS. A barn find example has now popped up, cleaned to its road-going glory and gone up for sale. How much do you think it will sell for?!

Undeniably a South African motoring legend, the E30 325iS took motorsport performance and offered it in a car ready for public consumption. The story would be incomplete without mention of Opel’s impressively potent Kadett GSI Superboss, which ruled the roost on South African racetracks in the early 90s. The 325iS was thus born out of necessity as a motorsport-inspired response to the global M3 (which was never sold locally at the time). The model was built in Rosslyn, exclusively in South Africa, by BMW SA. Setting it apart from its four-cylinder Opel rival and four-cylinder global M3 counterpart, it featured a naturally aspirated 2.7-litre straight-six engine in two key variants—the 145 kW “Shadowline” and the 155 kW “Evo II”—paired with a close-ratio gearbox and limited-slip diff.

The E30 shape itself is revered like nowhere else. Affectionately dubbed the “Gusheshe” in township car culture, the 325iS became the pinnacle of that icon but its limited production numbers of around 500 Evo IIs ever made, make it extremely rare and highly collectable. Auction prices have become ludcrious, with buyers prepared to spend upwards of R1 million for clean examples.

Cult classic specialists Gordon’s Auto has now sourced a barn find of a 325iS Evolution 1 with a genuine 75 000 km. The dealership reports that the car has been dry-stored and off the road for 17 years, and has photos to prove it. The second owner from new car is in original condition and will likely be a collector’s dream, but at a price premium! Let us know in the comments section how much you think it will go for.
