BYD Creates 200 kW Turbo Boxer Engine for Luxury Yangwang U7 Sedan

BYD has taken an unusual step forward with the Yangwang U7 by equipping its plug-in hybrid variant of the sedan with a fairly potent boxer engine that puts power out to the tune of 200 kW!

While the automaker typically uses inline engines, this move has been done strategically to enhance performance and efficiency while maintaining the sedan’s aerodynamic design.

The U7 serves as a flagship under BYD’s Yangwang brand, is available as a pure EV or a PHEV. The plug-in hybrid pairs the 2.0-litre boxer engine with four electric motors, delivering a total system output of 1 000 kW that is reported to complement the car’s advanced e4 platform. The horizontally opposed engine allows for a lower profile, helping achieve a sleek bonnet design and a drag coefficient of just 0.195.

These characteristics result in improved handling and stability, characteristics often associated with performance vehicles. The compact design also aids weight distribution, which can further benefit driving dynamics. Additionally, BYD claims the engine operates with reduced vibration and noise, enhancing cabin comfort.

In the PHEV configuration, the U7 features a 52.4 kWh BYD Blade battery and a 60-litre fuel tank, enabling a pure electric range of 200 km and a total driving range of 1 000 km. Charging speeds reach 230 kW, allowing a 30% to 80% top-up in just 10 minutes.

Beyond the engine, the U7 includes advanced chassis technology such as four-wheel steering, independent motor control for each wheel, and motor-controlled variable shock absorbers. Unlike traditional hydraulic systems, these electronic components adjust in real time, improving ride comfort and responsiveness. By integrating a boxer engine into its hybrid system, BYD has introduced a unique alternative to conventional powertrains in the luxury sedan segment.
