Chery-Owned Omoda & Jaecoo Set to Bring Expanding NEV Lineup to SA

The Shanghai Auto Show is coming to a close for 2025, and with it was a glimpse into the incredibly high-paced Chinese automotive world. Two of Chery Group’s subsidiaries (Omoda & Jaecoo) demonstrated their complete line-up of New-Energy vehicles (NEVs) that are touted to arrive in South Africa in the near future.

Omoda and Jaecoo’s stand at the Shanghai International Automobile Exhibition focused on a complete line-up of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), which align with the Chinese automakers’ intentions on becoming more carbon-friendly. This impressive growth comes just two years after their joint debut at the 2023 show. Becoming a force in South Africa, there is also a high likelihood that these models will all make an arrival on South African shores in the coming years, but more on that shortly.

Headlining the stand were three new models: the Omoda C7 SHS, C5 HEV, and Jaecoo J5 BEV. The models rely heavily on parent Chery Group’s platforms, technology and powertrains. The C7 serves as Omoda’s iteration of the Tiggo 7 Pro (as does the Jaecoo J5), while the C5 is underpinned by the same fundamentals used in the affordable and popular Tiggo 4 Pro. At the forefront of the automakers’ push is the SHS (Super Hybrid System). Recently tested on local soil with the Jaecoo J7, the system pairs a fifth-generation 1.5-litre turbocharged DHE (Dedicated Hybrid Engine) with an advanced Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) to deliver 253 kW and a combined range of up to 1 200 km. The group adds that it is incredibly advanced, achieving a thermal efficiency of 44.5%.

Chery has confidently added that this J7 SHS model is already receiving great success abroad and managed to crack the top three for plug-in hybrid sales in Spain during its first month on sale, grabbing nearly 7% market share. The arrival of the three new models employing electrification is another step in the direction of providing NEVs for its buyers. Locally, this momentum will continue with more electrified arrivals on the cards. Alongside the J7 SHS, South Africans can look forward to the C9 PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle).

“These models represent the next chapter in our NEV journey—defined by efficiency, performance, and intelligent innovation,” said Shannon Gahagan, National Brand and Marketing Manager for Omoda & Jaecoo South Africa. “We’re bringing this momentum home.”
