Hybrid BYD Sealion 6 Arrives in South Africa – Pricing and Spec

BYD has expanded its electrified footprint in South Africa this week with the arrival of the three models. Included in this trio is the Sealion 6 which will serve as a tech-laden plug-in hybrid SUV.

Following its best sales year yet which made it the global leader in EV production, BYD has shown its hand for the South African market. Following an anonymous period since its arrival in Mzansi, it has now decided to go ahead with a complete product onslaught. Having started out as a battery producer first in 1995, then an automaker 10 years later, all of these forthcoming models to be offered will feature some form of electrification which is what the Chinese company believes is its forte.

On display during is presentation ceremony were the Sealion 6, Sealion 7 and Shark bakkie. Of the three, the Sealion 6 will be the model that will go up against affordable SUVs. Under the sculpted exterior is BYD’s latest Super DM-i technology, combining petrol and electric propulsion in a hybrid package. Buyers will have a choice between front-wheel-drive (FWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) variants, both promising impressive range and performance.

The AWD model delivers 238 kW and 550 N.m of torque, allowing it to sprint from 0–100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. Meanwhile, the FWD versions place a greater emphasis on frugality, offering a claimed fuel consumption of just 5.5 L/100 km (WLTP). On a full tank, the FWD models boast an exceptional combined range of up to 1 080 km, while the AWD version offers a still-impressive 870 km.

Inside, the Sealion 6 comes into its strongest selling point; tech. A 15.6-inch rotating infotainment touchscreen anchors the cabin, paired with smart voice control and an advanced head-up display (HUD). Premium finishes and a digital cluster for the driver are also included across the range.
